Gnosticism

Black Opal :: Gnosticism :: Thoughts on Matter

Agape

This short essay is based on my musings on the nature of matter. Below it is another short piece on the exoteric and esoteric.

A Thought on Matter

I have been thinking about "the spaces in between", about matter and light/energy - orgone, vril, chi (etc).

Matter is made up of molecules. There is a certain amount of empty space between all these molecules, even in dense matter.

These molecules, in turn, are made up of atoms, which likewise have a great deal of space in between them. Added to this is the fact that there is a great deal of space within the atoms (electrons swirling around neutrons and all that, like a microscopic stellar system).

It makes me wonder if it is chance, or perspective that causes us to reside in and relate to the "material" universe and not in the empty (to us) sapces in between. That would be subtler stuff altogether, although, how would we perceive it? I don't know.

Anyway, if that empty space is energy (chi, orgone, divine light, etc), then it would be a cruel fate/mistake/joke for us to be solely inhabitating this side of nature - the heavy material side, as opposed to the lighter energetic side.

Of course there are those who say that we were tricked into residing in the material universe. Maybe it a matter of perspective (i.e. what angle/mental framework) you are approaching the argument from, but I don't believe that we were tricked. I think we either chose of our own free will to reside here, for whatever reason, or we made a mistake of some kind that caused us to lose contact with the true, whole nature of the universe - in other words, that if we were tricked, we probably tricked ourselves! But these are small matters and don't really affect the bigger picture.

You could also say that we are in some sort of contact with this other side of nature still. Spirits, visions, dreams, prayer, magick, however you approach it, this could be seen as evidence of this intangible other world. If we work at becoming conscious of the contacts we have with it, perhaps we can achieve a union with it and become the whole beings that we are meant to be.

Evil

The problem, as I see it, with the christian church is that it is wholly exoteric and is ignorant of the esoteric, the truth, the higher teachings, the secrets, the mysteries.

This is how it can be described as being the "false church", and that it fosters worship of the "devil" or "satan", the false god, the god of this world, Rex Mundi.

But, I don't see "satan", Rex Mundi (etc) as evil. I have a big problem with the word "evil". It is a label that helps us conveniently file something awkward or uncomfortable away without having to think about it. I do not know what word the early gnostics used for "evil", nor what it meant to them, but I don't like it for the reasons stated.

I think that satan, Rex Mundi, when used in this way, is the exterior of things. It should be complemented by the interior or esoteric, and when it is not, when the process is halted at the exterior and doesn't penetrate further, the hiatus could be termed evil. That is a definition I could live with!
