They represent aspects of life, the universe (and everything), our own natures and spirituality, that people can find difficult. But life isn't all sweetness, light and rose-scented water, and these particular female deities have strong energies that can be useful to work with, and rather than be ignored, can be incorporated into your life to achieve abalance that would otherwise be lacking.
